Thanks. I just tried to add a new service and defined the Config name to point to the host and the service isn't showing in the service status page. Have I missed a step? sorry i'm very new to this.

The config name wouldn't matter, you would need to define the host/hostgroup. Please take a few screenshots of the service config page, with both the Manage Hosts and Manage Hostgroups windows open.

So, I created a service as well as a test host group, then added the test host group (with 2 servers in it) to the service but I got an error. Not too sure where to look for relevant error messages.

I've attached some screen shots as well.

Thanks.

What error does it report?

It would appear as though your service "Uptime Report" does not have all the required minimum fields populated / selected. All the items it's complaining about (max_check_attempts etc) need to be populated in the service.
Once these minimum requirements have been met it will apply correctly.

The error I got is after I try to add a host group to the service. The service itself was created successfully so I think I've met all the requirements?

Prior to adding the hostgroup your defined service didn't ever get written out into any configuration files to be validated because it had no hosts.

Box293 is correct, you will need to revisit your service configuration and populate all of the minimum requirement fields.

service_description
check_command
max_check_attempts
check_interval
retry_interval
check_period
notification_interval
notification_period
contacts/contact_groups

Thanks. It was the check settings and alert settings that I've missed.

It's working now. However, I want to re-visit the reading that's being generated by the email alert.

CRITICAL: uptime: 40w 255d 5970:357946 critical

The above reading does not seem to make any sense. The setting is 200 days or more for critical alert. The server has been up for 282 days.

Many thanks.

Can you please go to the Advanced tab and take a screenshot of that so we can see the Performance Data.
