CentOS Upgrade from 2.6 - 7

Post by sharding »

Still running on CentOS 2.6, latest production is 7, what is your procedure for updating the OS or rather as a customer willing and wanting to upgrade to latest prod release what's the process?

Thanks in advance

Just to be clear here, do you mean CentOS 6.2 as opposed to CentOS 2.6? Or are you looking at the Kernel version, or perhaps an older XI version?

I personally wouldn't recommend upgrading it, I would setup a new CentOS 7 server and then install the same version of XI on the new system the run the backup_xi.sh on the old server and then run the restore on the new server. That would get you up and running with the best chances for success.

You can follow this guide here:

ok, seems a lot or work, how about upgrading kernel from 6.3 to a newer 6.3 version ?

what kinds of issues have you seen from going from 6 to 7 ? what things break ?

Code: Select all

This should work just fine for you.

yum update kernel

Code: Select all

I've run into a couple of wonky little issues. I would personally stay on 6 unless you have some dire need to to 7. I've seen certain service checks duplicate in a couple scenarios. The big difference between 6 and 7 is MariaDB instead of MySQL. You're not gaining a ton by going to 7. If you do decide to do this, my advice is take a snapshot just in case.
