Nagios XI 5 - Searchbox

Post by WillemDH »

Hello,

Just a quick question about the new (awesome) searchbox. in the past we have used the searchbox a lot. My guess is that we will use the searchbox even more now. But I don't get why we have to click first on the search icon before we can start searching. I think it would be better to always expand the searchbox. This would really lessen the amount of needless clicks a day a lot. Is there some way I could force this myself, would this need to be a feature request or is there some technical reason the searchbox can't always be expanded?

Grtz

Willem, I don't like having to do it either. I like the new features of it like you do, just not the having to expand it. I used to type something in, use arrow keys to highlight what I wanted, then press enter. Then I could press enter anytime after that to force a refresh. Now I can't even do that as what is typed in the search box disappears after pressing enter on it.

Willem,

On top of being always selected, do you want the search box to function like the one on the 'configuration wizards' page does, where it is selected by default? I am going to hand this over to Ludmil once I have a little more information to see about getting a feature request in. I'm also not clear on what you mean by more needless clicks, as you click it and start typing just like on the old one. Maybe you mean more precise of a click, as in a smaller area that you are able to click? I think the search box is condensed by default just for style reasons, I can't think of any technical reason it can't be always expanded.

Bandit,

You just want the name of whatever you selected to 'stick' after you search for it and select it, correct?

Yes to what you asked me and I'll answer a yes for having it expanded and selected by default also, even though you asked Willem :)

You are right about the clicking, it does indeed only require one click. It just seems like a harder job to search something. It might indeed be related to the precision of the click. I think what Bandit means and I'm also of this opinion that the searched text disappears once you click enter. Also selecting the searchbox by default when you click 'home' would be timesaving I think. I'm not yet sure about the other menu selections.

I want to get a decent feature request submitted for this. I could see where having it selected by default could be disruptive on some screens that have some other things going on, such as the configuration wizard one. Can you think of anything else I can throw in to a 'search feature enhancement' feature request before I submit it?

I think
- always exapnd searchbox
- remember last search
- auto select on home page
would be some very nice additions. You can close this thread unless bandit wants to add something.

I'll leave this sit for a little until I hear from Bandit, I'll submit the FR at the end of my work day (roughly two hours :D)

Your work day ends? Must be nice

I agree with what Willem said in last post but also: Search box auto selected no matter what screen if it was just used
