Some small issues with data visualisations

Post by WillemDH »

Hey,

Please don't be angry with me.... But I've been wanting to list some issues with certain visualisations for some time. Please advice what to with them. Make a feature request for each issue? Let you guys do an internal feature request? Solve some issue with email support?
In my humble opinion, they have absolutely no use at this moment, but with some small improvements, they could become of some real use.

The heatmap:
- Not possible to add to dashboard
- Not possible to resize
- When I hover over the heatmap, for example over a red 'particle', I get information of an OK result. (while I would expect a critical result)
- During my last tryouts of the heatmap I got several jquery errors (on Firefox) Please see attached screenshot.

Alert Cloud:
- Extremely slow, as it immediately starts loading all hosts and services?
- So much information / alerts in it that I can't read any alert...
- It should be possible to only select all hosts / service of a certain hostgroup / service groups?

Network replay
- One chaotic mess
- It doesn't really fit the window..
- Please check screenshot.

Alert Stream:
- Not possible to add to dashboard
- Not possible to resize
- Java error complaining it's not the last version, but I can't install the last version due to issues with certain other software
- Problems with the size of things, which put the legend out of the 'window', see screenshot

Alert timeline
- Never worked for me, had a thread for this http://support.nagios.com/forum/viewtop ... e&start=10 and was to be continued with email, but never got solved.
- can't add screenshot as I can only add 3, but it's just unusable at this time.

So has anyone else go the same issues? I can understand visualisations can be hard, but I just can't do anything with the existing ones at the moment. These are not urgent issues.

Thoughts?

Grtz

Willem

Some of the visualizations could be improved for sure and ... we are not angry... :) Thanks for the honest feedback! You can post a feature request/bug report on the public tracker or we can post an internal one - whatever is easier for you. Just let us know.

This should be a feature request - it would be nice to be able to add the heatmap to a dashboard and be able to resize it. In regards to "hovering over", I believe it would show the current status of this particular check. Perhaps it just recovered from a non-OK state? Look in the State History Report to see the state changes. I am not sure about the jquery errors in FF...

In my opinion, this is more of a "cool" or "fun" visualization than something that can be very useful (especially in a large environments). It could become more useful if you could "narrow" down the number of hosts, shown (i.e. limit by hostgroup), so I totally agree with you on that. I don't think this is going to be a difficult to do.

:) I printed the screenshot you uploaded and posted on the wall in the office. I should admin - it is useless, but... I would like to make a few points:
1. It seems like most of your hosts a placed around the center, so I wonder how much do you use "parent/child" relationships in your configuration.
2. It would be nice to be able to filter this down perhaps by "hostgroup" or "servicegroup", and to go full screen
3. Did you know that you can actually zoom in by scrolling the mouse wheel, and drag the image. You can also replay it (after you zoomed in), which should help somewhat. It would be nice to be able to zoom in and out via "hot buttons" and move the image around with arror keys in full screen... Another feature request.

Another feature request for adding a "dashify" button and resizing functionality. The component was developed before Java's introduction of the "Java Control Panel"... It is indeed annoying. I will discuss it with our developers and see if anything could be done to resolve the issue.

I've seen this issue only a couple of times (including you). As I remember right, Scott and I did a remote session with you, but couldn't figure it out. I still believe it is something unique to your environment as we are not able to recreate this in house. You are welcome to open an email ticket and we can try again troubleshooting this. We can get one of our developers involved, too.

Hey Ludmill,

Thanks for all the answers and sorry I didnt respond yet. I think it's time to close this thread up, as many things changed since XI 5. I'm going to make a new thread for some issues that are still there.

I'll go ahead and close this one. I had a good laugh at the Network Replay portion though. Thanks for that :)
