Notifictions not being sent to certain contacts

Nagios XI 5.2.3
Centos 6.6 (VM Image)

The system currently sends notifications to contacts that I have setup in the system. If I copy one of those contacts to a new one and change the accompanying email to one that is DL in Exchange no notifications are received by the members of the DL. I have tested:

- Sending an email to the DL from my regular mail account. It works
- Changing my Nagios user account's email to the DL email and then using the Test Mail in the Admin menu it works.
- Added the contact along with the known working contacts to a contact group and checked in Notifications for a history of what was sent out by the system. It reports it sent a notification even though none was received.

Is there somewhere else I should be looking as well,as I know outside of this system the DL works.

This could be many different things. With that in mind -
- Did you assign the new contact to services?
- What happens if you change the working contacts email to the distribution list?
- Is your XI machine using SMTP or sendmail?

- XI machine is using SMTP.
- The contact was added and is currently sitting in the same contact group as the other contacts. That contact group is configured in the service templates, which in turn is attached to the appropriate services. Same goes for hosts. We are receiving notifications for checks via the original contacts but none through the new one, even though the are both added to the same contact group.
- Changing a working contact to the DL usually results in the affected contact no longer receiving notifications. But I will this one in particular more thoroughly here in a few minutes.

My guess is this is coming down to confusion between contacts and users:

Most likely, the notifications that do work are coming from a contact that has an associated user, and the ones that are not just have a contact. Give that guide a read, it will explain things pretty clearly. If you have questions past that please ask!

I assumed as much myself prior to submitting this issue. I created corresponding users to match the contacts and still nothing. I even just changed the email in the contact for a valid user that was receiving alerts and now nothing for them either.

From your exchange server, do you see any logs relating to the Nagios message sending out?

After digging through all the possible failure points, it turns out:

- When using the Mail Test function in Admin menu it was sending directly using the SMTP authentication listed below and that works as accepted by Exchange for some reason.
- All other messages were being sent by the Nagios XI system as all evidence showed but was being stopped at Exchange for failure to authenticate. This is apparently related to automatic settings being applied in Exchange 2010 for group memberships depending on the type of DL used. Once that issue was fixed notifications are now being seen traveling end to end as expected.
