finanlly I was able to install NagiosXI successfully by installing npcd and copying nrpe and check_nrpe from another nagios box.

I'm running on CENTOS 6, installed MySQL and APACHE.

I think this was the initial issue here. The fullinstall script installs and sets these up for you. The installation scripts install mysql and set the mysql root password. If this has been done beforehand it can cause issues.
