VMware version of NagiosXI as a Windows service

Post by cskang »

Has anyone run VMware version of NagiosXI as a Windows service so that NgaiosXI can be started automatically when Windows is started?
I would be delighted to hear how it can be done.

I am not sure if it can be done easily... However, I tested one Nagios XI VM, which I started automatically in Windows 7 by following these steps (I used VMware Player):

1. Right click on my Nagios XI VM file: "nagiosxi.vmx" -> Send to -> Desktop (create shortcut)
Note: Don't move the VM, just create a shortcut

2. Move the shortcut to the Startup folder: -> C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

3. Restarted Windows 7 and my Nagios XI VM started automatically.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.
Actually, it worked in a way that NagiosXI is automatically started only when I log-in.
What I meant by a service which starts automatically when Windows start was to start NagiosXI after the power up (or restart) even if I don't log in to the PC.
In this way, if I access the NMS remotely and if there is a power failure or power glitch, then I can ask someone to just turn on the PC to restart NMS.
It will save my trip to go to the PC on which NMS is running and log-in to start the NMS.

I have been searching VMware site for the solution and found a web site explaining a general direction to create a user defined service in Windows 7.
I have not tried out yet to run VMware version of NagiosXI as a service, but I am just including it here as a pointer in case someone is also in my situation and wants to try it out.
