notification alert bypass

I have in several instances needed stop all notifications via email after an uncontrolled network outage. It's very easy to stop notifications through XI web access however I cannot find the area/file within Nagios to "clear" or reset the stored alerts from going out after the event mass outage has taken place. I use sendmail for notifications and stop the service for any additional messages held within the Nagios system. Is there a cleaner process to this scenario? If not how can I remove the pending notifications within Nagios?
