I recompiled the plugins with SSL enabled. That enabled a correct response from many CLI tests that failed previously but the nagios process was still shutting down.
Currently I'm building a Centos 7 bootable USB, let's start again :)

I'm sure I'll have more questions.

Great! That means you had things setup properly, but good ol' SSL was missing.

All done thank you.
Installed Centos 7 minimal & Nagios core 4.1.1 and it's all working the way it should inside of 8 hours from scratch :)
I'm sure Solaris would be fine but it was a little above my skill level to iron out the bugs.
I'm also sure I'll have more questions as I fine tune the setup with Centos.
