Getting Started

Post by brettmlawrence »

I am just getting started attempting to use Nagios XI to monitor websites, Linux servers, and both MSSQL and Oracle databases. I am really running into some issues trying to show some quick wins. We've had the product for some time and it seems to have been neglected and the responsibility is now on me to show its value. Is there any beginner version of a getting started. Some of the pain points I have is trying to figure out how to add services to existing hosts. Also I know we are going to need to use add-ons and have yet to have any success figuring out how to get any to work. ANY help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

Adding services to existing hosts can be done few different ways.

The easiest way is to run one of the monitoring wizards that ships with XI against an existing host. If you use the same hostname in Step 2 of the wizard, nagios wouldn't create a new host but it would add new services to the existing host.

You could also add hosts manually in the CCM. We don't have a specific document on the topic, but you could review out "Using The Core Config Manager For Host Management" document here:
https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... gement.pdf
Managing services under the CCM is done is a similar way.

You could add hosts/services from the command line and use some kind of scripting solution. For more information, please review the document below:
https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... gement.pdf

Lastly, you could use the REST API to add hosts/services. Review our "Backend API - Config Reference" documentation by going to the "Help" menu from the Nagios XI web interface, then clicking on "Config Reference" on the left (under "Nagios XI API Docs").

If you need more information, you could browse all of our documents in the "Nagios Support Knowledgebase" here:

Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any more questions. Thank you!
