Post-Reactor Epoch

Post by WillemDH »

Hello,

Could someone please enlighten me where Nagios is planning to go in the future with event handlers. Seeing as Nagios Reactor got discontinued, we would need to know how Nagios thinks we should handle our event handlers. Do I really need to use the classic event handlers system which is poorly integrated and where configuration for 800 hosts and 16000 services is a disaster. We have the feeling we're going back in time two years with Nagios XI.
What about the Reactor integration component and the Actions component? When will the Reactor integrations get deleted with a future update? What about "Run on notification"? Is this possible with the legacy event handlers?

Ideally there should be at least a replacement for the Nagios XI Reactor integrations, where there should be an overview of all event handlers with some way to bulk edit them.

Grtz

Hello Willem,

We do not have any plans of removing the integration in the Actions component or the ability to use Reactor with Nagios XI via the Reactor Integration component. We don't want to remove the current integration users have already set up. Maybe, in another major release (XI 6 or 7) we would consider removing it but we would definitely mention that it was going to be removed before taking it out - much like the deprecated message in the Backend API component.

As for current state of event handlers - I haven't had much time to play with making an improved interface for event handlers but there are definitely improvements that can be made. I am not sure what you mean by "Run on notification" but the Global Event Handlers component can run on notifications although it requires running a script. I understand that there isn't as much easy to use integration without Reactor being able to handle events for you.

I believe I have posted this elsewhere on the forums in response to a similar question but with both IM and Reactor may become extensions (or at least have a component that has similar functionality) in the new Fusion to address the situations where these solutions were helpful. I don't know when that will be and how much of the original functionality would be there since that hasn't been determined yet and these types of extensions will likely not be in the first rendition of the new Fusion, but added later on after it's been released.
