troubleshoot alerts (or the lack of alerts) issue

Post by caterpillartce »

Background:
1. I set up contact group and added the contact group to hosts / alert settings
2. I didn't configure contact group for services, so they should "inherit" from hosts
3. This is working fine for some hosts that the contact group gets alerts when both the hosts and services reach certain thresholds
4. For some other hosts, this is not working. Alerts from services are not being received (not sure about alerts from hosts as there has not been host issue)
5. The hosts in 3 and 4 are in the same host group; and services are set up for the host group, which means it is the same services that alert worked for some hosts, but not for others

How should I troubleshoot this?

Thanks

Are you able to PM me your profile and a hostname, servicename, and contact of a working one (someone received the email) and a non-working one (someone didn't receive the email)?

That would give us the best chance of finding out why it's not sending. Are you even seeing them in the notifications report?

Edit: Profile received and placed in our shared support directory

The reason why the contact didn't receive the email is because you have nagiosadmin defined as the only contact on the disk usage check that you PM'ed me, you will need to remove the nagiosadmin contact from the service so that it will inherit the contact_groups from the host like the other one that did send emails.

If you define a contact or a contact_group locally (meaning directly on the service definition) it overrides the inheritance.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Yes you were right (of course)! I didn't realize "contact" would have overwritten "contact groups" inheritance.

Thanks for the help! And this can be closed.

Yes I actually did read this document and that was why I decided to define contact groups with hosts and hoping services would inherit. I guess I failed to realize "contacts" in services could overwrite the inherited "contact groups". I thought "contacts" and "contact groups" are two different and separate variables.
