Question - Contact and Users

I am trying to figure out the best way to update phone number information of each of my contacts.

the old way of doing it is by log in as the user and update the phone number that way, is there a best way to do it. I feel this information should be available on the contact instead of a user. Not only that is not conveniente, but you need to have a user to setup phone number. Sometimes you dont want to create a user just the contact

Traditionally, there hasn't been a "specific" directive for a phone number for contacts in Nagios Core. There is a "pager" directive instead. Having said that, you could add phone numbers to the "addressx" field. For more information on the topic, please review the Nagios Core documentation here:

You could add these phone numbers under the CCM too (in Nagios XI) - CCM->Contacts-><your contact>->Common Settings->Addon Address x.

As for users, you could masquerade as each user, and add a phone number this way.

Right, I was aware about that...I was just hoping that maybe there was a more convenient way to do it.

for alerthing purposes, Nagios seems to be using the phone number defined in the Users instead of the contact Addon Address X. if I decide to add the number in the contact, where do I need to make the switch so Nagio used that field instead

There isn't a way to change this, as you'd be using the XI SMS notification handlers which are specific to the user settings.

If you'd want to have your system respect SMS through contacts, follow the instructions @lmiltchev posted.
