Morning all, I am new to using Nagios and am trialling out the 60 day Nagios XI trail in order to see if this is a better monitoring tool for our infrastructure. I have set up some basic monitoring of ESXi hosts and now I want to monitor some Windows VMs/physical servers and monitor services. What is the best way to go about setting up service groups as I'd like to divide my monitoring up in to SQL servers, SharePoint Server, AD, etc... I have a quickstart booked in for 7th December but i'd like to get cracking with seeing what this product can do in the meantime.
cheers,
Bob

Re: Newbie setting up service groups
So, my immediate thought is to use host groups: https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... gement.pdf
Is there a specific reason you are looking at service groups instead of host groups?
If you really want to dig in, you can take a look at https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ricks.html, but that might be overkill at this point.

Re: Newbie setting up service groups
Thank you for the reply, I wasnt sure whether to use host or service groups. The reason for service groups was to manage application processes so I can see when AV for example isnt running on a VM or when vcenter service has stopped. I have a quickstart tomorrow with Nagios support which should help me understand how to configure my monitoring. As well as using this for SSL cert management, I am looking to see if it can replace our existing monitoring tool. Which will bring me on to SNMP monitoring...

Re: Newbie setting up service groups
Could you clarify this point for us? Are you saying you have questions about SNMP monitoring, or are you just saying Nagios will be your first go at SNMP? SNMP is conceptually very simple, but actually using it requires a lot of attention to detail. Of course, XI takes care of that some of it for you. For additional detail, see https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ios_XI.pdfBobstar wrote:Which will bring me on to SNMP monitoring...
Awesome about the quickstart!
Re: Newbie setting up service groups
Hi - i've managed to set up SNMP monitoring today and am running monitoring on some test servers. Sorry for appearing scattergun in my approach to using Nagios I am just trying to learn what it can do. The quickstart should help me out somewhat tomorrow and i'll get a better handle on what it can do. I have sussed out what host groups to use and how to configure them so for now i'm happy with the progress I am making with it.

No problem at all! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing a "hidden" question.Bobstar wrote:Sorry for appearing scattergun in my approach to using Nagios
Be sure to check out the snmpwalk feature. It seems to be under used.
Re: Newbie setting up service groups
I'll give it a bash and see what it does!

Sounds good! If you get tired of reading documentation, we also have a number of videos on our SNMP features: https://www.youtube.com/user/nagiosvide ... query=snmp
