Last update check failed

CentOS release 6.2 (Final)
32 bit installation
Manual install of Nagios XI on top of a fresh install of CentOS (desktop install - so gnome is installed)
Proxy is in use - /etc/wgetrc and /etc/yum.conf have been updated as per FAQ

wget commands work as expected, and yum commands also work OK.

However, Nagios XI 2011R1.9 reports "Last update check failed" - and any attempt to retry also fails.

I am sure this is an obvious problem - but I do not know where to look to get further information to understand why I continually get this error.

Any advice greatly appreciated.
