GROUPS and Objects relationship

We are having many strange problems with our Escalations and modGearman not working as advertised, and now wondering if this has to do with groups inheritance.

Please help with definite answers.

1. how Hosts should be configured under the hostgroup: by '=>' (group defined from the host) OR by listing hosts under 'Assigned' ?

2. how Services should be configured under the servicegroup: by '=>' (group defined from the service) OR by listing hosts under 'Assigned' ?

3. how hostgroups should be configured under the hostgroups: by '=>' (hostgroup defined in another hostgroup) OR by listing hosts under 'Assigned' ? / what makes one group parent to another group and not the other way around?

4. how servicegroups should be configured under the servicegroups: by '=>' (servicegroup defined in another servicegroup) OR by listing services under 'Assigned' ? / what makes one servicegroup parent to another servicegroup?

5. Same for contactgroups?
