Nagios migration to new server

Post by digea »

Hi,

We are planning to reinstall and reconfigure Nagios from scratch into a new CentOS server and we would like to ask the following:

1) Is it possible to change our licence to cover a different IP address? If yes, what is the process for doing this? Also, is it possible to have a temporary licence so that we can have both systems up and running in parallel for a short period (etc., for 1 month)?

2) Since we are not going to follow a backup & restore procedure to configure the new Nagios, what is the best procedure to follow in order to backup all the historic data stored in the old server so as to be able to access them in the future if needed? Is backing up the content of folders "/usr/local/nagios/var/archives" and "/usr/local/nagios/share/perfdata" enough for that purpose?

1. You'll need to email [email protected] for details, but you should be able to install one for backup, one for testing, and one for production. If you don't already have those three in use, then you should be fine.

2. It's impossible to say what you might want in the future. Certainly our backup script does more than that. If it were me, I would just run the regular backup script and then just not restore it if that's really what you want to do. Basically, just run through the first part of https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ios-XI.pdf. There's probably enough information in that document combined with https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ptions.pdf to built your own backup script if you don't want to back up everything we do.
