Upgrade Nagios XI 2011r1.6 (CentOS 5.6, 32 bit) to current

Post by mgolino »

Hi guys,

I'm a newbie at Linux and currently have a physical box with Nagios XI 2011r1.6 on CentOS 5.6, 32 bit. We are looking to migrate it to a VM and then upgrade Nagios from there. What would be the best approach to this while maintaining all of our config settings? I did download and look at the backup and restore pdf. I also tried to create a CentOS 6.9 VM, installed Nagios 2011r1.6 (which we had to modify to get it to install) and restored the backup file, but ran into some backend DB and certain check status issues. Is there an import config files procedure that can be used if I download and deploy the current VMware ova file? Any info or help is appreciated!

This is listed as Core to XI, but the general procedure should work for what you want: https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ios_XI.pdf

Please let us know if you run into issues.

One question, should I try this on a new VM with 2011r1.6 installed (then upgrade) or 5.4.4? Not sure if the files are compatible with the new/current version.

i would start fresh if possible by just porting in your configuration files if possible. the reason being is you're still going to be running postgres for a database where as the newer versions of XI are running mysql across the board.

the other option i've seen work on my end, is go from x version -> upgrade to 2014 -> then upgrade to current version. as there are a lot of changes since 2011, this will help squash the inconsistencies.

So after many attempts of trying to backup & restore to 2011 & 2014 VM's, I finally reached out to support, who advised me to start out clean and try to import the config files. So I deployed the 5.4.4 OVA and then installed various SDKs (Oracle & VMware). Once I completed that, I followed the Migrating from Nagios Core, Importing Core Config Files into Nagios & Using the Nagios XI Import Prep Tool pdf's. I installed plugin prerequisites, imported/copied plugins and copied .rrd and .auth.txt files. I still had to clean up some check syntax and added users, but managed to get it working :P .

Thanks for all the help and guidance!
