SNMP Monitoring Error

Post by phsita »

Hello All,

I am using Nagios XI.
I am trying to monitor a Centos Machine over SNMP. (Let's say the IP of it is- Y.Y.Y.Y )
The SNMP Configuration is OK on the host side.
I have tested the snmp by snmpwalk command from the Nagios Server Machine's shell itself.
In the Nagiox XI, I have added certain SNMP Services like-
CPU Usage
Memory Usage
Swap Usage
/ Disk Usage
/boot Disk Usage

All of these service are throwing the following error response-

Code: Select all

ERROR: Description/Type table : No response from remote host 'X.X.X.X'
But, what is more interesting is that X.X.X.X here is the IP of Nagios XI Server.

When I am testing the command from the service definition in the Core Config Manager, it prompts for the Host Address, and I give it as Y.Y.Y.Y,
the test gives the genuine response with the actual remote host values like

Code: Select all

Physical memory: 91%used(3496MB/3832MB) (>90%) : CRITICAL

Code: Select all

Swap space: 0%used(8MB/4096MB) (<80%) : OK
It seems like the service is taking the Hostaddress as the Nagios Xi Server's IP (X.X.X.X) itself and not the remote SNMP Machine's IP (Y.Y.Y.Y).

Can anyone help to resolve this issue?

Thanks

Can you share a system profile? From the Nagios XI GUI, you can gather a profile via Admin -> System Profile -> Download Profile. I think something may not be configured correctly.

Could you PM in your Nagios XI System Profile so we can review it?
To send us your system profile. Login to the Nagios XI GUI using a web browser.
Click the "Admin" > "System Profile" Menu
Click the "Download Profile" button
Save the profile.zip file and PM it back to me.

We would also need to know the host name or the service that is causing the error message.

One thing to try is to make sure you are running the latest Linux SNMP wizard and if not, update it.
Go to the Admin > Manage Config Wizards menu and check for updates.
Go down in the list and if the Linux SNMP wizard needs to be updated, update it and see if that fixes the issue.

You are running an older version of the Linux SNMP Wizard and if the server is behind a proxy, follow this KB article to configure your server to use the proxy server for updates.
https://support.nagios.com/kb/article.php?id=147

The current version of the Wizard is 1.5.2.

I took a look at the service settings for that host and they look correct.
First thing to check is to make sure that host is setup for SNMP and that it is not getting blocked by a firewall.
Also, verify that the community string matches between the server and the Nagios server.

The server that is working does have a different community string that the server that is failing so you should check that first.

Thanks tgriep

I am trying to sort out the proxy issue.
It would be great if there will be a direct url for this latest v1.5 Linux SNMP Wizard.

The SNMP string is correct and working just fine with the snmpwalk command from the Nagios XI Server's command line.

Will give update on any progress.
Thanks again for your help.

You can use the following link to download the latest Linux SNMP wizard.
https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... x_snmp.zip

One question, in the community string, do you have special characters?
If so, you would have to update the Wizard and create a user macro with the community string defined.
Then when you run the Wizard, you would use the user macro in the wizard in the Community String field that that should fix the error.

Take a look at the instructions for creating the user macros in XI in the document below.

Thanks tgriep.
I have installed the new version v1.5.2 of Linux SNMP wizard.
It is running very smooth and showing proper snmp response in the Summary/Grid dashlets. It's really cool.

About the SNMP Community string, we don't have any special characters in that. But thanks for the instruction as it will save the troubleshooting in future.
Will keep that in mind.

Thanks alot guys.

As of now this issue is fixed.
