VMWare config wizard host retrieval timeout.

Hi,

I am trying to add new hosts to check using the VMWare virtualization wizard.
However, when I select "host" for the check type, the plugin times out. I tried removing the -t 90 en --timeout 90 from all of the VMWare plugins + adding the config file to the VMa. But the plugin still times out after 90 seconds :(

When I run any other check it works fine. vCenter, Datastores, Guests: all no problems or timeouts. The existing checks for vSphere hosts also work fine.

Any help appreciated!

Can you show us a screenshot of the error/failing page? Are you saying that the vmware wizard times out on Step 1, when you select "Monitor the VMware host"? See below:

What is the version of Nagios XI and the VMware monitoring wizard that you are currently using? What is the version of SDK that you installed on this box? What is the OS/architecture?

Try running the wizard again. When it times out, run the following command in the CLI, and post the output in code wraps:

Also, run the following command and show the output:

rpm -qa | grep perl

Is the proper port open for VMWare?

This is a different VMWare host than your other checks, correct? Are you sure you have network access to that server?

From the XI server, what is the output of traceroute VMWARESERVER?

No, I just want to enumerate the hosts so I can assign checks to them. We use(d) this for all our VMWare checks. And as I said: the guest/cluster/datastore checks work fine. All the (host) checks we have made previously also still work. So it is not a connectivity issue.

I have just now noticed that when I run the wizard the VMA machine to where the checks are offloaded goes to 100% cpu and stays there untill a reboot. Maybe the troubleshooting needs to be on that end?

It sounds like the vMA appliance's resources need to be increased.
Try adding another CPU to the appliance and increase the Memory allocated to it as well and see if that helps.

Can you login to the vMA server, run the following to vet the version of the vmware perl script you are running?

If you are not running this version 2016-10-02, then download the newer one at the link below and upgrade it on the vMA server.

I had already increased the vMA to 4 cpu's. I am not comfortable giving it even more, that might impact the rest of the machines on that host to much. Memory is not an issue, only 200miB or so in use.

The plugin was indeed an older version. I upgraded it to the latest. Unfortunately it does not solve the problem.

We have recently upgraded (migrated) our NagiosXI from CentOS6 to 7. We added some host checks after that, which worked fine. But about two weeks later I can no longer add host checks. Might this still be something related to the upgrade?

Another thing you can try is to increase the concurrent_checks to a larger number and see if you can add more hosts.
It may be when the Wizard runs and there are other connections, you are hitting the limit.
--concurrent_checks
• Maximum amount of concurrent checks that can run at any one time
• Default is 15
• This option helps prevent the vMA appliance from being overloaded, as the VMware SDK will consume
lots of CPU and memory resources
• Can be defined in the arguments config file as:
◦ VI_CONCURRENT_CHECKS=xxx
◦ Refer to the “Arguments Config File” section in the manual for more information
◦ Using the config file is highly recommended (instead of using --concurrent_checks)
• Example:
◦ --concurrent_checks 25
One thing to try it to login to the Nagios server as root and run the following command

tail -f /var/log/httpd/*_log
Then run the Wizard again and post the output of the tail command.
Your posting of the last 100 lines probably missed the error and the above should catch it.

I have increased the number of concurrent checks to 30, no difference. Strange thing is that the check works fine for two different VSphere hosts using the same VMa appliance!
