set email notification

hi all,
i need assistance in configuring my email notification, i added two user for test, but when i request to send a test email, it's say that it's sent but i receive nothing in my mails box,
can someone direct me from scratch what i should do in order to start receiving alert notifications on my email address. am new here and a bit confuse

Under Admin -> System Config -> Manage Email Settings
What setting do you have set?
Do you have a valid email specified?
On this page it also shows some log locations that will likely contain the error messages

This will enable debug logging for phpmailer emails. The log is located here: /usr/local/nagiosxi/tmp/phpmailer.log
Sendmail log location depends on your system (examples: /var/log/maillog or /var/log/mail.log)
