Possible OFF-TOPIC - snmp timeouts...

Post by scobi »

Hi Nagiosians!

n00b is back with another question - or ideas on the best way to clear this...

I don't believe this is related to xi in anyway, but I'm getting the alerts so hoping someone had run into a similar issue and can give me some ideas.

Running XI 2011R2.2

I've got monitoring working great on a NetApp Filer. Everything is great but occasionally I receive snmp time-outs that throw an alert due to "Uknown" state. I've checked with the storage guys and there is nothing exciting happening on that Filer at the time we get alerts (low CPU, very low disk activity, low network utilization, etc.). The only other thing to note that may be of interest, weve got 2 heads on that Filer, only one has the occasional snmp time-out issue, the other is perfectly happy.

I suppose the best option would be to figure out why the time-outs on this head, the other option would be to not warn on "unknown" state? Anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks!

Scobi

Clearly you already know what the best thing to do is.

More importantly is that there may be underlying issues with the filer and this could be your "warning" to take a look. Too many time I have had machines that started doing something odd and it made me go, hmmm that's weird, fix the symptom, but not look into what the problem was, and a couple months down the road lose the server...

But it may take a while to figure it out, and you proposed what I would do until I got it sorted out.

Great advice... I've kicked it over to our storage team... In the meantime I'm keeping the alerting in place so I can at least let them know the times we're getting ignored by the Filer.

Thanks again!
