feature request: add SNMP trap management

Post by tacolover101 »

let's be honest, managing traps in most monitoring systems can be a mess, unless you can control it on a large scale dynamically. this is where a logging system comes in handy.

this feature request is for the ability to have NLS receive SNMP traps out of the box.

logic?
1. add option in NLS to 'turn on' trap receiving. this starts / enables the service, or stops / disables the service.
2. NLS uses snmptrapd to receive traps and write to file
3. logstash ingests the file and parses out fields

as companies move to more of a real time approach, managing traps in a mass will be very powerful for large organizations.

It is not available in the current release. It is still under review for future versions if NLS. It is coming eventually in XI though.

how will this work in XI? there is already trap management, but it isn't viable on a large scale.

i don't think it would be very difficult.
- add a default input to absorb traps
- create rule to 'parse' traps
- create place to manage 'MIB' file

this now makes managing traps across all of your org maintainable at a sane level, without the need for one off configurations.

sure, you'll have to manage the different types of devices....hopefully the org is sane enough to stay consistent here. :D

Additionally...

This is what I was told:
you can tell him there will be an snmp trap management interface coming soon
I'm not sure if it's everything planned, but there's definitely some cool stuff coming in XI 5.5.
