Notifications not working

Post by abetzold »

I would really like to be able to sell my management on the purchase of this product but I am having an issue with notifications and I am not a Linux expert but I do love my command prompt. The problem is, I have setup the server to use SMTP not sendmail and I am able to send test messages. When I try to get a notification to go out via a host though I get nothing. I see in the gui where it thinks it sent a message but I am not getting anything. Please let me know what logs you'd like to see and how I can go about getting them.

Thanks,
Adam

If I can dust off my sales hat briefly:

Scheduling a quickstart can be a good way to grease the wheels with management. An hour with a Nagios tech can typically address many common use cases (like notifications).

The following logs are usually relevant if you wouldn't mind sharing them:

Code: Select all

/var/log/maillog
/usr/local/nagiosxi/tmp/phpmailer.log
There should also be an option to "Enable Debugging" or somesuch on the mail settings page.

There's also per-user settings on whether or not certain notifications are received. Apologies if any of the following is incorrect as it's all from memory. From the Nagios XI GUI, if you click your username in the top-right corner, the resulting page's left-side menu should have a "Notification Preferences" and "Notification Methods" link that allows you to enable/disable notifications completely, only receive certain types of notifications via email/text, etc. Page 7 of the notifications documentation also shows you how to do this for multiple users in one shot.

So all my settings are configured to notify me. I looked and no phpmailer.log existed. I enabled debug and triggered a message and still no file exists. I clicked send a test email and the file appears. So I am not sure why it is saying it is notifying by no messages seem to be going out.

Thanks @mcapra.

@abetzold, I strongly agree with @mcapra.

To add to what @mcapra mentioned, please run the following command...tail -f /usr/local/nagiosxi/var/eventman.log

This command can be used to watch the logs related to events and notifications in Nagios XI.

As you run that command, force an immediate check by clicking on a service that is in an Warning or Critical state, then watch the logs and post the output.

See steps below:

Step 1: Establish terminal session and run command
Watch_logs.PNG

Step 2: Go to Service Detail menu and click on a Warning or Critical service.
Select_service.PNG

Step 3: On the Service Status Detail page for that service, click on Force an immediate check to the right under the Quick Actions options.
Force_check.PNG

Step 4: Watch logs and post the output.

This is a really good idea. You can fill out that form or just email [email protected] directly.

That said, can you PM me your Profile? You can download it by going to Admin > System Config > System Profile and click the ***Download Profile*** button towards the top. If for whatever reason you *cannot* download the profile, please put the output of View System Info (5.3.4+, Show Profile if older) in the thread (that will at least get us some info). This will give us access to many of the logs we would otherwise ask for individually. If security is a concern, you can unzip the profile take out what you like, and then zip it up again. We may end up needing something you remove, but we can ask for that specifically.

You can also generate a profile manually using the script at /usr/local/nagiosxi/html/includes/components/profile/getprofile.sh

That should generate a profile in /usr/local/nagiosxi/var/components/ which you can get off the server with an application such as FileZilla.

After you PM the profile, please update this thread. Updating this thread is the only way for it to show back up on our dashboard.

If you get an error that PROFILE BUILD FAILED, please see https://support.nagios.com/kb/article.p ... ategory=44

You may also want to check out our pre-built OVAs: https://www.nagios.com/downloads/nagios-xi/vmware/

UPDATE: Profile received and shared with techs.

I'm going to leave the below because I think it might be useful in the future. However, I think I have your issue. In your event_hander.log you have the following:

Code: Select all

<p><pre>SQL Error [nagiosxi] : You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '16:06:00),NOW(),'0')' at line 1</pre></p>
There was a packaging error in an early release of 5.4.11. This has been fixed. You should re-download 5.4.11 and just re-run the upgrade over what you have and see if that resolves the issue. Make sure you run the ./upgrade and not the ./fullinstall.

------------

So, this is a separate issue from the screenshot you sent, but I feel like it's worth noting:

Code: Select all

I haven't been able to confirm whether this is an issue yet, but since it is the end of our day, I want to go ahead and point you to https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... Mailer.pdf

Also, what's the output of sestatus and chage nagios -l

So those boxes are not the ones I am worried about. I just downloaded the OVA 6 days ago and put in a vCenter server with some DMZ servers included on it, a physical server, and that's really it. I just want to show the basic monitoring and alerting to management here. That said, I did not do an install so I don't know how to do a reinstall, all I did was deploy the OVA. Has that OVA not been updated?

Just to be sure, could you update the OVA by downloading the latest.tar.gz? You can run these commands through the terminal of your XI Server. (They are separate commands)

You should save a backup just in case. (There's a link in the documentation)

Code: Select all

cd /tmp
rm -rf nagiosxi xi*.tar.gz
wget http://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nagiosxi/xi-latest.tar.gz
tar xzf xi-latest.tar.gz
cd nagiosxi
./upgrade
The same steps are listed in our documentation in the "Manual Download" section.
https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ctions.pdf

Once it installs successfully, let us know.
