Nagios servcies hung

Post by raamardhani7 »

Hi we have below two concerns:

1)There was one network outage and our NagiosXI was also in the same network. So what would be the impact on our NagiosXI.
2)Network was down and its services were also down, so would NagiosXI still send the notifications to the ticketing tool?

In both the cases NagiosXI was not down.

Hello, @raamardhani7. If the network is completely down, Nagios probably wouldn't be able to reach the other hosts/services and it will set their state to "unreachable" or "critical" and attempt to send out the corresponding alerts(if those are enabled). The rest depends on what you're using to send those alerts. If you set up an email type alerts and your email server resides inside the non working network, then alerts will spool up and get sent out as soon as the network goes back up. Some people have a stand-alone text message service that Nagios will use to send SMS alerts once the network goes down. Another solution to the same problem is to have another Nagios server on another network that checks Nagios Server #1, and if sends alerts when it's unreachable.

Hi,
The actual scenario was there was network outage. Nagios Services never went down, they were stalled. We got a notification stating that the
"services are staled".
We need to understand if this scenario(Staled nagios services) occurred due to Network outage.
Also, is this likely to happen every time when the network outage happens?

@raamardhani7, If you got a notification that means Nagios Server could still communicate with the ticketing system. However, if Nagios was set to receive passive check results from the services that haven't checked in with results you'd receive a "stale services" notification. You could set the services to go critical if they haven't received any passive check results after a certain amount of time. If you'd like. Hope that explained it.

HI Team,

We have two DC(Data Center). Each DC is monitored through two different Nagios XI servers. We had network outage in DC1 and we receieved the notification in Nagios XI of DC 2 that our DC1 Nagios XI services were staled(Monitoring using NagiosXI).
Prior to this network outage the services were up but after this network outage the service went into staled state. We need to understand if this is an expected behavior of Nagios XI that when an outage happens , the services goes in a staled state.
