Multi-Tenancy

Post by swiftarcher »

I have a multi-tenancy system setup for departments. But if I create a dashboard with Summary Hostgroup it shows every hostgroup that the Host is a member of. This host could be a member of different solutions i.e. Email systems Hostgroup, but may also be a member of Infrastructure Hostgroup. But I only want to see it as part of Email System Hostgroup for the local IT team. But then Global support just require Infrastructure Hostgroup. Hope this makes sense.

It is true that when a host is added as a member to multiple hostgroups, adding the "Host Status Summary" dashlet to a dashboard would show all of the hostgrouops, the host is a member of (provided user is authorized to see this host). Currently, this is the default behavior. In Nagios XI 5.5, there will be a lot better granularity as far as multi-tenancy goes. I am not sure if the "Host Status Summary" behavior would change though.

Have you tried adding a hostgroup status instead (as a "workaround")?

For example:
1. Go to Dashboards > Add New Dashboard, and add two dashboards - "Infrastructure", and "Email System".
2. Go to Home > Hostgroup Overview, and click on the dashify icon (Add This To a Dashboard) to add "Infrastructure Hostgroup" to the "Infrastructure" dashboard, and the "Email System Hostgroup" to the "Email System" dashboard.
3. Go to Dashboards > Deploy Dashboards, and deploy "Infrastructure" dashboard to Global Support users, and "Email System" dashboard to local IT team users.

Thank you for that. The only issue with that is that when you have a board of 20 odd Hostgroups it get very untidy and some hostgroups have around 200 servers so they tend to be below the main screen. We use it like a Warboard so its mounted on the wall for the team to keep an eye on.

I'm not finding a working alternative and would like to point out that 5.5 is expected this quarter(https://www.nagios.com/roadmaps/) so it may be best to put this on hold until it can be tested on 5.5.

Are we alright to close this up then? Or did you have further (related) questions?
