Monitor Nagios XI Log Files

I'm just wondering if it's possible to have XI monitor it's own logs (using check_log) or is that not advisable?

I'm thinking of the dbmaint.log, checking for crashed tables etc.

It's doable and I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't be advisable. Make sure that the nagios user is able to write to the file/directory specified with the -O option.
