Assistance requested for fresh install / migration

I am preparing to install a fresh instance of Nagios XI, and have read over a handful of supporting documentation on the forums, HOWEVER I was looking for any advice/tips moving forward. I assume the import prep tool is a necessity (https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... p-Tool.pdf), but I am not understanding the process completely. Any help is appreciated!

- XI 5.4.13 , ~300 hosts, ~13 groups --> XI 5.5.4 (migrating over all configs, hosts, etc)

- XI machines and hosts are all VMs in an OFFLINE environment

Nagios XI 5.5.4 is installed and in place in the offline environment -- on the same subnet as 5.4.13, which will be replaced.

32 or 64bit? 64

VMware Image or Manual Install of XI? Manual

Are there special configurations on your system, ie; is Gnome installed? Are you using a proxy? Are you using SSL? No

If you are moving from one XI server to another, this can be achieved by making a backup on your current system and restoring this on the upgraded server. Please note:

1. Take a snapshot of your VM and backup before proceeding.

2. You can only backup and restore between the same versions of Nagios XI. Either upgrade the existing server, and start with 5.1.13 on the new server and then upgrade. Software Archives available on your website:

Yes. You can perform the upgrade to 5.5.4 after restoring your previous version. We have short video on the process on our YouTube channel that I recommend watching.

No, you can upgrade to whatever version you'd like, he's saying that you can only backup and restore to the exact same version of XI. See my answer below for more information.

So because you can only backup and restore to the exact same XI version, he's saying that you have two options:

1. Backup your old server (5.4.13) and restore to a new server that has XI 5.4.13 installed (not 5.5.4, they have to be the same version to backup/restore), then upgrade your new server from 5.4.13 to 5.5.4.

OR

2. Upgrade your old server to XI 5.5.4, take a backup, install XI 5.5.4 on the new server, and then restore to the new server.


The point is to keep the old server XI version and the new server XI version the same exact version when using the backup/restore functionality, which will make it an exact copy of your old server configuration. So you can either upgrade the old first or upgrade the new last.

Is it possible to prep import, then use core config to ingest the configs from an older version? I've given this a shot once, but am lacking hosts and services.cfg from the export.

The backup and restore process should have brought over the configurations for the hosts and services, so it should not be necessary to use the import prep tool. This tool is for migrating from Nagios Core to Nagios XI.

Did you upgrade the older 5.4.13 server to 5.5.4 before performing the backup and restore to the new server?

I was able to finally finish this today - simply put, I used the RPM tarball to upgrade versions (with some modifications to deleted tables in 5.5.4).
