Migrate NagiosXI from one server to another

Post by Sampath.Basireddy »

I am planning to migrate NagiosXI from one server to another due to some problems with current server which we were unable to fix.

Found this document for Backing Up And Restoring Your Nagios XI System
https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... 1538586925

Plan is to keep the same server name and IP address so we don't have to make any changes at the client side (Especially Network Devices).

Are there any additional safety measures advised when doing this activity apart from Backing Up and Restoring ?

Please suggest.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Sampath,

The process is pretty straightforward, as described in the document. And your original server will remain intact while you test the new server.

Let us know if you have any additional questions.

@bolson, Thank you for the confirmation.

I am trying to retain same server name and IP Address. Just out of curiosity, any additional steps if the server name and IP had to be changed.

One thing I am sure is, all the network devices SNMP Settings has to be updated with new server IP.

Thanks

@Sampath.Basireddy, This really depends on what kind of hosts and services you're monitoring in the existing environment and what kind of checks you're using. For example, for nrpe checks, you'd need to add the new XI IP address to the allowed hosts in the nrpe.cfg files on all remote servers; for the nsclient servers you'd also need to add the new IP to the ini files.
Also, you'd need to change the program URL in the XI System settings.

I'd say, make a backup of the existing XI then turn off the server. Set up the new server to use the same IP address and then restore from a backup. This should be the easiest way to go about this.
