Nagios currently uses DHCP to fetch an initial address and in the future will use ip4ll(Link Local addresses 169.254/32) with bonjour/avahi. Is this what you are talking about?

That would be nice, but I think you want Nagios to probe your network and configure the services it monitors. As that's a vary nice feature it's also a vary frightening feature. It's currently possible to construct a Wizard that would do this. Currently there are many other tasks that may not be more important, but are more beneficial to the high quality areas of our product. That is as this feature is useful it's just as *dangerous and we rather focus on features that are both beneficial and safe.

* Probe finds 80% of 100% of what it detects and configures that showing all green. Later one of the extra 20% not probed and thus not monitored crashes and every one asks why it was not monitored.

It's better to fully audit your systems and monitor what needs to be monitored then it is to have some application put together a list of whatever it can find/see. Although I know it's a great tool to do both and have most of the work automated and enter the extra 20% by hand.
