Surprisingly, that actually worked. Thanks for the help. I can see where I need to configure things now.

Then I would add some debugging output to the python script. Have it open a log file in /tmp or send msgs to syslog. It should be submitting external commands to Nagios Core as documented in the Nagios 3.x Documentation.
