Upgrading from CentOS 6 to 7

Post by gregwhite »

We are in the process of ordering new hardware for our Nagios environment. Our existing environment is running CentOS 6.5 and NagiosXI 5.4.12. Initially we were going to keep the environment the same on the new hardware until we successfully migrated Nagios. Now they want us to have the new environment at CentOS 7.x. Are there any Gotcha's we should be aware of? If we use the default MarisDB can we restore from our existing environment? Or do we need to keep the new environment with Postgres SQL so we can do the restore and then convert it to MariaDB later.

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Greg,

If your current system is using Postgres, I would convert to mariadb and then do the migration. One thing to note, the version of Nagios XI that your are restoring to must match the version the backup was taken from. So if you do not want to update Nagios XI on the exising server, you'll want to install Nagios 5.4.12 on the new system and then perform the upgrade of Nagios XI.

Here are few useful guides to help you with the the process:

Converting PostgresSQL to MySQL for Nagios XI
Backing Up and Restoring Your Nagios XI System
Nagios XI Previous Versions

Also, if you'd like assistance with the database migration, please open a support ticket.

Thank you. Just to clarify so I understand, we should convert our current environment to MariaDB? Then when we restore NagiosXI from the current to the new environment we are already using MariaDB.
Our plan to upgrade NagiosXI is after we are on the new hardware. Our current concern is to make sure we migrate to new hardware that is using CentOS 7.

Thanks,
Greg

That is correct. However, this a recommendation not a requirement. In either case, I would recommended taking care of the migration first and then upgrade Nagios XI to the latest version.
