Intermittent Issue - Ping Hostname

Post by nelsonw »

We are experiencing intermittent connectivity issues with connecting to any monitored host from within Nagios XI.

For example, when running check_ping, we get the following error

check_ping: Invalid hostname/address - <hostname>
Usage:
check_ping -H <host_address> -w <wrta>,<wpl>% -c <crta>,<cpl>%
[-p packets] [-t timeout] [-4

5 minutes later, when the check runs again, it is successful. Also, when I run check_ping direct from the command line, it runs successfully every time. For example,

./check_ping -H <hostname> -w 100.0,20% -c 500.0,60% -p 5
PING OK - Packet loss = 0%, RTA = 0.53 ms|rta=0.527000ms;100.000000;500.000000;0.000000 pl=0%;20;60;0

This issue is impacting all checks that connect to all our monitored hosts, (e.g. check_ncpa, check_http, check_ping, etc). The issue is happening very frequently and impacting all our hosts, so is very critical for us as we are unable to effectively monitor our systems.

Please help

Nelson

We were restoring a Nagios backup file to a new instance at the time, I am not sure if this is related. (We are migrating from Centos to Ubuntu server). FYI - The new instance is on a 60 day trial version of Nagios XI. Once the migration is complete, I plan to transfer my current license across to the new instance.

I have read your Knowledge Base article on "Useful Logs" (https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... 1558532681)

Hi,

The issue is caused by migrating our Nagios XI server from CentOS to Ubuntu. We have shut down Nagios on the new Ubuntu server and our original instance on CentOS has now stabilized and is running fine.

It is possible to run them in parallel for a few days? We would like to confirm the migration is successful before turning off the CentOS instance and transferring the license across.

Thanks,
Nelson

Hi Nelson,

You could keep it on the trial license, but your license provides up to 3 installs (production, test, and DR). If you have any questions about licensing or the license transfer, please contact [email protected].

Nagios XI - Licensing Policy

It looks like the Ubuntu server is having intermittent network connectivity issues. If you migrated from the Cent server, it would have the same settings and configurations.

Can you re-boot the Ubuntu server and PM the system profile for us to review. Thanks.

To send us your system profile.

Login to the Nagios XI GUI using a web browser.
Click the "Admin" > "System Profile" Menu
Click the "Download Profile" button
Save the profile.zip file and share in a private message or upload it to the post/ticket.
As of May 25th, 2018, all communications with Nagios Enterprises and its employees are covered under our new Privacy Policy.
