Confused about service_template applying or not

We have the same situation. Reading that post, it appears that I need to still apply the service template to a service on each host (or at least one host) and then it will flow down.

Does this seem correct to you?

No. I just created a new service and applied a template only

In the template I have assigned only this hostgroup, and no hosts

After Applying Configuration, I have the "test" service applied to all hosts in the hostgroup

OK, the light bulb finally went on for me. I create a service that does not have to be tied to a host configuration. I can create another configuration called whatever. That will "activate" the service template which will applies it to all the hosts in the host group.

Does that sound correct?

I was missing the bit where the service didn't need to be tied to the host config I think.

I'll add that by default when you run wizards, Nagios XI create the configs for the services and uses the hosts name for the config name, but this is just a convention, not a rule.

I'm sure this is what caused the confusion
