Post by rferebee »

Hello,

I tried to update my test server to version 5.6.5 this afternoon and I got some funky errors I haven't seen before:

Check your configuration file(s) to ensure that they contain valid
directives and data definitions. If you are upgrading from a previous
version of Nagios, you should be aware that some variables/definitions
may have been removed or modified in this version. Make sure to read
the HTML documentation regarding the config files, as well as the
'Whats New' section to find out what has changed.

We recently upgraded our test server from CentOS 6 to CentOS 7. I did this by restoring a backup of XI from the CentOS 6 server to a freshly installed CentOS 7 server and then running the restore repair. Could that be the cause of these errors?

Thank you.

Ick. CentOS 6 and 7 are dramatically different. selinux comes to mind with this sort of operation. I'd check that it's disabled, first (selinux and Nagios do not get along).

Second, my personal approach (and this is not a professional opinion) is that the easier way to do this operation, ignoring plugins and custom code for a minute, is to take the config files from the old version and use the import functionality on the new version, rather than backup/restore. This way, you're dealing with straight text files for config file import. However, you'll lose history information this way, which may not be acceptable for your situation.

Thanks for your reply. SELinux shows it's disabled on the server.

Any other ideas? I have two more XI servers I need to upgrade and losing historical information isn't an option, but if there's a better way to do the upgrade than a backup/restore I'm all ears.

Error: Could not add contact 'xi_default_contact' to host (config file '/usr/local/nagios/etc/hosts/doberman.cfg', starting on line 16)
Error processing object config files!
I would look at this first. It may be that you can clear up this undefined contact, and move the upgrade forward.

Aside from that, there are a couple of other useful commands.

Verify your configuration files.

Code: Select all

/usr/local/nagios/bin/nagios -v /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg
Check to make sure you have space for the upgrade.

Code: Select all

df -h && df -i
And make sure you don't have any crashed tables in the database.

Code: Select all

echo "SELECT table_name AS 'Table', round(((data_length + index_length) / 1024 / 1024), 2) 'Size in MB' FROM information_schema.TABLES WHERE table_schema IN ('nagios', 'nagiosql', 'nagiosxi');" | mysql -uroot -pnagiosxi --table | grep NULL

I have the 'xi_default_contact' set to inactive on all my Nagios XI servers. It's not causing any problems on my two other boxes.

The config files all come back okay.

I don't get anything returned for this:

echo "SELECT table_name AS 'Table', round(((data_length + index_length) / 1024 / 1024), 2) 'Size in MB' FROM information_schema.TABLES WHERE table_schema IN ('nagios', 'nagiosql', 'nagiosxi');" | mysql -uroot -pnagiosxi --table | grep NULL

Okay, great, if the query didn't return anything, that means you don't have any crashed tables. So that much is good.

Could you PM me your system profile? I'll take a look on my side and see if I can nail down exactly what's stopping the upgrade.

So, it looks like the update actually went through despite the errors. The console is showing version 5.6.5 installed.

If you wouldn't mind taking a look at the system profile regardless that would be great. Just to make sure nothing is hosed after the CentOS 7 upgrade.

Thank you!

Excellent, I was just about to reply! Yes, I am seeing in the profile that you are running 5.6.5. After a quick look at the profile, everything seems to be good. If you go to the Admin section, and Check For Updates, does it show 5.6.5 there?

Yes, it's showing 5.6.5 there as well. I could have swore it wasn't showing the update in the console, but I must have been mistaken.

Excellent! We'll call this a surprisingly smooth upgrade. :) I'll go ahead and lock this thread.
