Spikes in load

Post by meganwilliford »

We have noticed some extreme spikes in the load on all of our Nagios XI servers. We haven't bulk added or made any sort of modifications that would have potentially cause the spikes. Is there a process that runs in the background every few hours that may cause this? We are making sure this isn't anything to be concerned about and what is causing it. (image attached)

It's very hard to answer that question without significantly more information. But yes, the Nagios system does maintenance RRD file maintenance and database cleanup and stuff like that on regular cycles. 100% CPU load is not a problem - it simply means you're efficiently using your processor without wasting resources.

That fact that your graph is pretty cyclical makes me think it's standard background processing. Without knowing more details like type of processor, memory, and what else your machine has configured on it, it's hard to say specifically.

Thank you @eloyd.

Hi Megan,

I would second Eric's assessment and not necessarily a signal that there is an issue with the server. The article below explains all the cron jobs that run regularly on XI.
