VMware problem

Post by Mark de Bokx »

Noticed today also that while running the VMWare wizard to add a VMhost its shows the HOST fine but not the GUEST.

When i try to add the VM Guest I get a greyed out Guest Selection Tab with the following message:

"It appears as though the VMware SDK has not yet been installed on your Nagios XI server. You must install the SDK before you are able to use this wizard"

Saw this was also addressed in:

http://support.nagios.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=554

But the answer is not very clear as to where NagiosXI is going with this. As stated, a lot of people live in an evironment that is more and more virtualised. Being able to monitor this and also to correlate alarms (HOST / GUEST) thus becomes more important.

I want to know if my HOST still lives, but I also want to know if the GUESTS living on that host still live. The ideal situation would be the possibility to monitor both VM host and its underlying guests with a single check in a treelike view (comparable to HOST and the SERVICES on that HOST).

And then, this is only VMware. We have a rather large (and important) Citrix environment that needs to be monitored. No more PC's in the office, but thin clients connected to the datacentre where all applications are running on Citrix (XENapp, XENServer, XENdesktop etc.)

This is as stated. The test runs the script that would test your server... if that script can't load the SDK then you won't be able to monitor your server.

You must satisfy this condition.

Has anyone succeeded here? I am having the same problem where the configuration wizard states that the SDK is not installed, yet I can successfully use check_esx3.pl to return the CPU utilization of a named VMware VM when specifying a vCenter server for the host argument. It is the vCenter server that I am going after with the configuration wizard as well, of course.

What I did notice though is that the documentation states you need the 64bit SDK. I am using the 32bit SDK...

@ mmestnik

Errrmm what do you mean with .. "you must satisfy this condition?" Maybe it's the language barrier here, but its rather cryptic and doenst give me enough insight to tackle the problem.

Anyway ... I really like XI (it grew on me last 30 days testing it in a POC) and I am on the verge of convincing management (you've already beat Solarwinds and Ms SCOM) so a clear answer as to what goes wrong or a pointer towards a solution would really be appreciated!

Thanks!

Mark de Bokx,

It's a VMWare product that we can only offer limited support for. Seek assistance from VMWare on correctly installing the SDK.

Dear Mmestnik ;)

I know its not something you are resposible for. But as stated.... SDK is configured correctly (I followed your directions!) ... Is it that maybe something could be wrong in the VMware Wizard? (I can remember something like that happened before with the Windows wizard).

Thanks again!
