requesting best practices recommendations.

Post by grant.bakken »

we currently have version 5.4.4 running on a CentOS 6.3 VM.

We would like to upgrade to CentOS 7 or CentOS 8 as well as bring NagiosXI current as well.

In addition to the fact that CentOS 6 is getting a bit long in the tooth, this upgrade is being driven by the fact we are also looking at wanting to use plugins that require later version of Python for example - and I've read other posts about only supporting the version of Python that came bundled with the distro version.

after all that here's my question -

is it better to do an in-place upgrade of CentOS to a newer release followed by a NagiosXI upgrade to current, or stand up a fresh install of CentOS on a new VM with NagiosXI 5.4.4 installed and do a backup/restore of the config to the new one, followed by upgrading NagiosXI 5.4.4 to current?

Thanks!

Hello Grant,

Good question and welcome to the Nagios Support Forum! I see this is your first post.

It looks like you are familiar with the upgrade process, and that's right, we would recommend setting up a fresh server with CentOS 7 ( 8 is not supported right now) with Nagios 5.4.4, migrate your data and then run the upgrade to the latest version.

To access archived versions of Nagios XI, go to:

For step-by-step instructions on the backup/restore process, see:
