SNMP Traps - Nagios

Post by veeravamsi »

Hi Team,

I have below queries regarding Nagios SNMP Traps . Can you help us understand make better choice :

1. I noticed there are two ways to consume SNMP Traps - SNMP Traps as SERVICE && Traps on SNMP Trap Interface
Which option is BEST and Recommended ?
Any Comparison Chart to show their Advantages and Disadvantages

2. Does SNMP Traps on SNMP Trap Interface affect Node Status when there is Critical Event ?

1. They both require a service, if you have the enterprise license I would use the SNMP Trap Interface as it's more convenient. If the service doesn't exists you would see it in Admin > Unconfigured Objects.

The Nagios SNMP Trap Interface (NXTI) is an enterprise component, you can see what that allows here:

https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... h-NXTI.pdf

See here for the standard method:

https://assets.nagios.com/downloads/nag ... ios_XI.pdf

2. It won't affect the host state, but if you create the service and enable/setup the Passive Service section in the SNMP Trap Interface it will affect the service name you define in there. You can adjust the trap definitions to do some advanced things such as MATCH and parsing of severit or you can force it to a severity:

See here:

Code: Select all

http://snmptt.sourceforge.net/docs/snmptt.shtml#SNMPTT.CONF-MATCH
Let us know if you have any further questions.

Thank you!
