Upgrading Nagios Core

Post by shalinz »

My Company has version 3.2.3 of Nagios Core and no one has ever maintained it. Can I upgrade from this version to 4.4.6 directly, or is there some type of upgrade path I need to follow? Or do I just build a new server with the latest release and try to bring in what I am monitoring into the latest release?

I haven't worked on Nagios in almost 13 years so I not familiar with Nagios as much anymore.

Hi,

Yes, you can certainly upgrade to versions, and here the instructions for upgrading Nagios Core. You'll want to make appropriate backups of your configurations and/or take a VM snapshot.

How to Upgrade Nagios Core

Given that it's so old you might want to just spin a new server and migrate the configurations over.

Thank you for that information. One last question. My company also has Nagios XI version 5.4.10 and we need to get that on the latest.

One thought I had was get Nagios XI to the latest and then migrate what is in Nagios Core over to this instance of Nagios.

Hi,

No problem at all. There are some tools to help migrate Core Configurations to Nagios XI. Basically, you run an import prep tool to break up the files so XI can understand them, and then import them a specific order. This is covered in the following guide.

Migrating From Nagios Core

Let us know how it goes.

Upgrading Nagios Core

Just so Im sure, can I simply run the install in the root directory on the new server even if all of the old scj files are present or should I delete everything, or some of the files?

Hi,

Apologies, but what are the old scj files on the system, the configurations? You will not lose the configurations if you follow the upgrade instructions.
