Transition from NSCP to NCPA - guidance

Good afternoon team,

I'm wondering if someone could take the time with discuss with me exactly what it's going to take to transition away from the NSCP client and onto the NCPA client. I've read through the documentation I can find, but to be perfectly honest... it seems like a daunting task.

We recently attempted to install the latest version of XI on our test server and were unsuccessful. It seems like it might benefit us to migrate to the NCPA client first.

I would appreciate if someone from the support team could help me develop an attack plan I can present to my superiors.

Hi,

We've migrated most of the Windows based wizards over to NCPA, so if you're running standard checks it's pretty easy to set up monitoring with NCPA. However, the two programs do have differing functionality, so it does depend on how you have your checks setup with NSClient.

If you want to share your profile along with the names of the servers to move to NCPA, I can take a closer look for you.

Hi @rferebee,

Thank you for your patience. Looking over the profile, it looks like most of the Windows checks were set up using the Wizards in Nagios XI so that will help with the migration.

As far as an attack plan, you can run both agents on a host, so I would test this out on a few sample hosts to make sure you're happy with the results before making widespread changes.

How do I prepare my XI server to be able to run NCPA? I guess that's my main question.

Is there a setup guide or step by step that I can follow?

There is nothing special that you need to do. There are only 2 steps you need to take:

1. Install the NCPA agent on the remote machine(s).

You can do this manually by following the instructions here:

In the latest XI, you could also "auto-deploy" the agent.

You could just run the NCPA wizard against your target host(s).

2. Run the NCPA wizard against the target machine(s)

The steps in the wizard are pretty much self-explanatory.

What is NRDP related to NCPA?

I remember looking at this last year and seeing something about setting up an NRDP front-end.
