Has anyone customized Nagios core to make it work?
We cannot afford the paid version, but I like ease of configuration that I see in Nagios XI. Are there some good links that anyone knows to get this configured on a Centos or Ubuntu VM?

Welcome to the Nagios Community Forum!
Yep, lots of people using Nagios Core out there everyday, it does work.
If you're trying to install on a new VM, I would recommend following our official installation docs as they are up-to-date.

By the way, it's limited to 100 host and services checks, but there is a free version of Nagios XI available as well.
