Re-configuring Nagios environment

Post by KentBa »

Hi,

Our Nagios environment is made up of all different service/host checks and different ways of setting things up, that have been done over the years by various people in my role.

I have been tasked with re-designing how this is set-up, specifically for our RDS instances.

Is it better to configure a set of services that multiple RDS instances use or configure a set of services for each RDS instance?

I like the simplicity of the former but the latter seems more practical in the long term.

Can anyone please advise?

Hi @KentBa,

The quickest way to set up services for each of your RDS instances would indeed be to configure service checks for one of such host and clone them to your other RDS instances (using the Bulk Host Cloning tool in XI for example). Unfortunately, this wouldn't offer the level of granularity you may want for each of these instances that could be accomplished by individually configuring services. Perhaps the middle-ground would be to determine which service checks are common amongst your instances, clone those to each, and - as needed - add or remove specific services per instance. Ultimately, however, I believe you know better than anyone else what fits your environment best!

Hopefully this was helpful.

Thank you!
