Multiple email notifications

Post by aap »

Hi,

I have Nagios XI 3.3 running and recently noticed that on some hosts that we monitor we recieve 2 emails notifications for the same alert. It does not matter if it is a Warning or Critical alert, we just recieve it twice.

I have checked each of the affected hosts and everything looks ok - there are no multiple services etc.

Any ideas how I can troublehoot this further?

Thanks

Did you configure them any differently than your previous Hosts/Services? Are you using a different MTA?

The Home->Notifications page shows all notifications that go out from Nagios, whether they are SMS or email notifications. Are you seeing duplicate alerts there?

Check your contact definition in the Core Config Manager. If you have more than one host notification command defined for a contact you could potentially have this issue.

Thanks for your reply.

On the notifications page, I only see one message for each of the offending alerts. The services in question have been added via bulk import or manually. could this be the issue? Majority of the hosts work perfectly.

I manually deleted one of the services having this issue and re-added it and the issue did not re-occur. Is there a way I can ascertain how many services I have this issue with?

Thanks again.

We may need to see the whole configuration snapshot to decipher this. I see these have contact groups attached to them, are you sure you do not have multiple contacts in one of these groups with the same email address (maybe one is a mailing list that forward to you)?

Thanks for your reply.

I have checked all the various settings and there is only one contact group configured. It only affects some hosts not all, whereas they've all been configured in the same way.

I have attached the whole config snapshot for you to have a look at. We are monitoring about 900 hosts and 9000 services and have not had any major issues till this one suddenly appeared.

It may not be related but we've recently upgraded to 3.3 from versiion 2.1 and no hosts have been added since the upgrade so the configuration has not changed.

Thanks. for your reply.

Yes that is correct. These are two separate mail groups. The issue here is we receive two email messages each for the same alert even though we are only a member of one of the groups. No one is a member of both groups.

This only happens on a some hosts so there is indeed an issue to resolve. Please let me know if there is anything I need to clarify.
