a plea for a new wiz

Post by benhank »

When I use the bulk host import cloning tool, or the host creation wiz, They both create objects with local settings.
Can someone be kind enough (for the low low price of free=D) create a bulk object that will not put any local setting in said objects? OR even better is there documentation out there that will help me to create one for the community?

For some situations, a wizard might not actually be the idea solution for a bulk config. You can apply single services to a list of hosts, or even a hostgroup. So if you have to clean 5 services for 100 hosts, you might actually be better off creating a hostgroup and then just applying those 5 services against the hostgroup. That way if you ever need to modify the service for all hosts, you only have to do it once.

Agreed. That's the thing, if I use the current import wizards, they apply local settings to all the objects. I am talking about a wizard that basically will only add the ip, host name and a description. Then I could go back and pop the templates on em.
OR even better one that will work like the bulk host cloning wizard, BUT without the need to have a machine to clone, but still allow me to check of the parameters I want.

Now the uber wizard would allow me to either clone a device, create the vanilla setup, or "groups" at the same time =D so If I need to add 1000 objects, I could add them associate the checks desired and create new hostgroups/service groups add the checks and (yes I went there ) add contact groups and contacts in bulk in one huge feast of csv files. But my company don't have the cash to pay someone to do that. Well, they do, but they won't. :( If I knew how to create wizards I would do it and share.

Sounds very similar to what others are asking for:

Doing this will take some updates to the actual wizard framework in XI, which we can do, from there we could probably look at some sort of advanced cloning wizard, although it would have to be the kind of wizard that would allow you to break the monitoring config if you wanted to in order to have the needed flexibility. ; )
