NagiosXI 2012 couple of questions.

Post by sikainfo »

Hi,
I've seen the first Version of 2012 is released.
For deciding if I will need the Enterprise Edition or not, can you give me some hints:
Actually we monitor around ~600 servers with ~6000 services (all active), and what is the point to need an Enterprise Edition ?
You remember maybe you promised me, to guide me trough the upgrade process. :?:
I have downloaded the tarfile, but i see a lot of problems in the forum and maybe I should wait a little bit.

Here's a breakdown of the feature list for both versions of 2012. You'll have to decide what you're likely to utilize with your installation.
2012RC2 - 09/04/2012
====================
- New 2012 Features implemented
2012 Standard Edition:
- New Core Config Manager
- Configuration Rollback
- Tools menu for external URL tools
- Bandwidth Report
- Executive Summary Report
- Custom Action URL's
- Nagios BPI 2
- Emailed Reports
- SSH Terminal access built into the UI
- Nagios Mobile now included
- Automatic installation of all current components, dashlets, and wizards
- Deadpool for obsolete hosts and services
- Improved Autodiscovery Wizard
- Custom Home page
- NRDS Config Manager

2012 Enterprise Edition
- *All features mentioned above*
- Capacity Planning Report
- Bulk Renaming Tool
- Bulk Modifications Tool
- Escalation Wizard
- Scheduled Reporting
- Scheduled Page Report
- Notification Settings Management
- Nagios BPI Hostgroup and Servicegroup Syncing
- Audit Logging
Your installation has an exception to the norm because of multiple added repositories creating package conflicts, so most likely you'll run into a package conflict upon upgrading to 2012. What we'll do is simple remove those prereqs from the upgrade script since they're already installed. The 2012 prereqs are only installed upon an upgrade from 2011-2012, so once the upgrade is complete there shouldn't be that part to worry about anymore. Yes, we're aware of your exception and we'll help you through it :)

Inevitably with a lot of new features there will be a few growing pains along with it. For ANY upgrade of XI, we usually recommend people stage it first in their test environment, and if all goes well, apply the upgrade to their production install.

So far we've really been happy with the new features. It added a lot of wizards and functionality that I know many businesses would like to have.
