Nagios XI 2024R2.1 Dashboard Issues

Post by shoreypu »

Hello,

I just installed 2024R2.1 and I noticed a few dashboard issues.

1) Dashlet Latency:
a) Some metrics dashlets, for example Administrative Tasks on the Home Page dashboard take longer to load then the rest of the metric cells. This occurs every time and with multiple test users. If I add additional Administrative Task dashlets to the dashboard, they load immediately.
b) I've also noticed that the Hostgroup Status Overview dashlets are just as slow on our dashboards. There are only 4 hosts, so it shouldn't be related to the number of hosts we have in the hostgroup.
2) Dashlet Font Size
a) I've noticed that the font size can vary on some dashlets, for example, the Hostgroup Status Overview font size can vary from one dashboard to the next (larger vs standard size). I've also noticed that on other dashlets that fonts and metrics are smaller.
b) I'll also mention that dashlets are no longer aligning with one another.
3) Modern Theme Readability
a) Our default theme for our users is Modern. If you go to look at dashboards, it becomes a mix of dark and light. There is grey text that in the dashlets that is unreadable, for example.

Are these bugs and if so, have they been reported already? I'm not sure where I would find bug reports for Nagios XI or submit a bug, aside of this forum.

As always thanks for your feedback and any solutions you can provide. These issues may stop us from deploying this version for our users.

Hello,

Thank you for your inquiry. We have several dashboard-related bugs on our radar and we are working to address them soon.

1.
Latency often happens due to underlying factors such as network quality, system performance, and number of hosts/services currently being watched by Nagios. If you are running Nagios on a VM, you could try rebooting it to see if that improves performance. Make sure to have a backup available before doing so.

2.
Do you happen to have an image of font sizes being different or the dashlets being misaligned? It might also be good to have the dashboard exported as a backup file in case you want to revert it back to a previous state.

3.
Try editing the dashboard's background color. I recommend using a transparent color in this instance.

Let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi @shoreypu,

I was able to replicate the issue of the Hostgroup Status Summary dashlet taking a longer time to load than other dashlets, and will create an internal issue to be investigated.

Dashlet font size inconsistencies are likely due to a dashlet being scaled up or down by clicking and dragging the handle in the bottom right corner of the dashlet. If this is not what is causing the inconsistencies between different instances of the same dashlet, please let us know!

As for the Server Statistics dashlet, it seems that dashlets containing a table lack a background color for the light Modern theme. I will create an internal issue to get this fixed. A temporary solution to this problem is to change the dashboard's background color to be transparent. This will cause the dashboard's color to match the user's theme regardless of whether they are on light or dark mode for both Modern and Neptune themes.

This can be done by navigating to Dashboards -> Dashboard Tools -> Manage My Dashboards -> Edit (on whichever dashlet you'd like to modify), and check the box that says 'Transparent'

Thank you for reaching out and for the feedback! Please let us know if you have any further comments or questions,

Here are a few examples

1) Layering a Host Status Overview and Service Status Overview on top of one another, I am unable to get them to align with one another. You will notice in the first screenshot, one is above the other and in the next screenshot its below.

2) I notice several font issues.

The host font sizes no longer match and cannot be resized to do so.

The metric font sizes are now tiny and cannot be changed, even by enlarging the dashlet.

Continued...

After rebooting it looks like the overall size issues I noticed may have cleared, however some of the fonts are now much smaller. Here is a comparison of Home Page Dashboard for versions 5.11 vs R2.1. Of note, previously the Administrative Tasks dashlet was much larger.

In general, dashboards are not aligning the way they do in versions prior to R1 &2, which is holding us up from upgrading our production environment.

Let me know if you have any other questions or would like to schedule a call. Happy to help.

Hi John,

Thank you again for the feedback! I went ahead and created an issue for the dashboard alignment issue, and it will be investigated and remedied by our development team

Thanks,

Some dashlets may perform heavy queries or API calls on initial load, while additional instances hit cached data 1v1 LOL

Thanks for the update, Zachary.

I can confirm that I’m seeing the same behavior on my side. The Hostgroup Status Summary dashlet consistently takes noticeably longer to load compared to other dashlets, so it’s good to know this has been reproduced internally.

Regarding the font size inconsistencies, I checked the dashlet resizing behavior you mentioned. In my case, the sizing differences were not caused by dragging or scaling the dashlets manually, so it does seem like something else is affecting the display across different instances. I’d appreciate it if this could also be reviewed as part of the investigation.

For the Server Statistics dashlet issue, your explanation about table-based dashlets not having a background color in the light Modern theme makes sense. Setting the dashboard to Transparent does act as a temporary workaround, and it does help equalize the appearance between Modern and Neptune themes.
