Problem with "Hostgroup summary"

Post by Frédéric GRANAT »

Hi,
First : when I go in Hostgroup summary there's a column "Services" showing the status of the services on these hosts, whereas there is a Servicegroup summary.
Second : In hostgroup summary, If there's an host in critical state, I click in the column hosts and line corresponding to my group I go on a screen :
Service status
Hostgroup : myhostgroup

Host1 : service 1 unknown
service 2 unknown
...etc

I'm not interested in service status but only in host status (one more time, there's a servicegroup summary for that).
In hostgroup summary I would expect only hosts status and informations linked to hosts.

Why services information displayed in hostgroup summary ?

It would be a misconception to think that hostgroups only relate to hosts. Many users use hostgroups to apply services to all the hosts in a hostgroup.

For example, did you know that you can create a service and add a hostgroup instead of a host?

This will cause the service to be added to EVERY member of the hostgroup. If you set several of these up, all you need to do is add a host to the hostgroup and all of the services that have that hostgroup applied will be added to the host.

Thanks for these informations.
Nevertheless, my problem deals with information display and not configuring.

Here's an example (I'm experiencing).
Assuming you've got many hosts down in a particular hostgroup and 5 services in each.
you want to see which hosts are down, the information about services is not usefull (they are linked to the hosts).
The information about unknown services will pollute the usefull information because you won't have space enough on your screen.

Scott is correct. A hostgroup means that the group is organized by the hosts, not that it will display only hosts. This is entirely by design. Note that the servicegroups also display host status as well. Although your primary concern may be the hosts in the hostgroup, and not the services, the vast majority of users require the service information.

If host information is displayed in services screen and service information is displayed in host screen, then what is the value of having screens dedicated to host or services ?

The host status pages show only host status. The service status pages also show host status, because the state of the host is most certainly relevant to the service states. A down or flapping host state is most definitely relevant information to display on the service status pages.

Maybe you can help us understand what outcome you're looking for from this thread?
