Ongoing CCM Problems

Post by fkroeger »

I still have not been able to get a working Core Config Manager after a new install in RHEL 5.5 32b
NagiosXI appear to install OK, I can see the NagiosXI web page. When I select the Core Config Manager, it appears that the underlying d/base is empty ie: it was not populated during the install process.
Original email below was sent 4 days ago to Nagios - I have coloured the important bits:

Fred,
I'm unsure if there is/should be any data returned from the wget calls. However it's not for sure an error or even a warning for these to be blank. The intent is to push data into php, there is nothing done with the output.

Can you look and see if there are any errors on the php(apache error_log) side of things when these requests are made? We are still looking for something that definitely is causing you problems. Also check the apache access logs to make sure the requests are getting processed.

I'm not (un)convinced that there is something else going on here.

Now we have some suggestions for working with proxy server configurations in our FAQ, basically you need to configure the host/client so that localhost and 127.0.0.1 are not sent to the proxy. This bit depends on how your are configuring the proxy and that in-turn depends on what type of proxy you are using. As there are several types of proxy and for each proxy there are a number of ways to have it configured it's difficult for us to provide every one with detailed instructions. We certainly can take a look at the technology anyone is using to configure there proxy and advise a usable configuration example, also knowing about the proxy server could be helpful.

Whatever problems I've got, they are consistent as this is now my 6th clean install in RHEL 5.5 and each time I seem to get problems with the importing of data. I'm not sure that the proxy connection is a problem. I only point to the proxy for the 0-yum (new version) and 1-prereqs.
In fact I have changed the 1-prereq so that it does a wget of the external rpms and then does a rpm install using the local file. From that point on , there is no proxy connection defined.
When I run the E-importnagiosql script I don't get any apache errors and there is a corresponding entry in the access log to show that it did connect OK.
127.0.0.1 - - [18/Oct/2010:08:12:22 +0800] "POST /nagiosql/admin/import.php HTTP/1.0" 200 - "-" "Wget/1.11.4 Red Hat modified"
127.0.0.1 - - [18/Oct/2010:08:12:22 +0800] "POST /nagiosql/index.php HTTP/1.0" 200 - "-" "Wget/1.11.4 Red Hat modified"
127.0.0.1 - - [18/Oct/2010:08:12:22 +0800] "POST /nagiosql/admin/verify.php HTTP/1.0" 200 - "-" "Wget/1.11.4 Red Hat modified"
127.0.0.1 - - [18/Oct/2010:08:12:22 +0800] "POST /nagiosql/admin/verify.php HTTP/1.0" 200 - "-" "Wget/1.11.4 Red Hat modified"

I tried running the sql command that Tony sent me to check the d/base and the command syntax he sent won't work on my system:
# mysql -u root -p nagiosxi
mysql> USE nagiosql;

I found that it was still prompting for a password and was using the password field as a d/base name - so I changed the command to:
# mysql -u root -p
mysql> USE nagiosql;

That connects OK when I enter the password:
I then run the query Tony sent and find there is nothing there:

mysql> SELECT config_name, service_description, check_command FROM tbl_service;
Empty set (0.00 sec)

So... assuming that everything has installed OK - how can I import the setup info into the d/base manually apart from using E-importnagiosql which is not working?

regards... Fred

There must be no space between -p or --password= and the password following it.

If you have corrections for E-importnagiosql we would be happy to review them. You can get started by debugging scripts with bash's -x flag. Like so:

Code: Select all

( set -x; . ./E-importnagiosql; )
The script contains the list of commands to be used to import the setup info into the d/base manually and you may use them as our instructions for doing so.

Do you have "MySQL-Server" or "mysql" package installed?

We depend on "mysql", for the moment(today Oct 19th 2010).

I'm working on another system just now, not having the same problem as you.

These instructions don't fully address using proxys, in perticular they neglect to even mention a handfull of proxy client software/configuration avalible, like tsocs or using well known http_proxy/no_proxy environment variables.
http://support.nagios.com/wiki/index.ph ... th_Proxies

Though the above should be helpfull.

Packages installed are the standard RedHat packages plus any others that the NagiosXI application scripts installs

Code: Select all

[root@lxfm201nag ~]# yum list | grep sql
This system is not registered with RHN.
RHN support will be disabled.
mysql.i386 5.0.77-4.el5_5.3 installed
mysql-devel.i386 5.0.77-4.el5_5.3 installed

Re: Ongoing CCM Problems

Post by mmestnik »

Looks like this script is working fine, it's the NagiosQL part that's not being performed properly. Back up and try to get NagiosQL setup and configured properly, that is the error lies in an earlier step. As suggested something with mysql.

Can you enlighten us as to how you configured your proxy and it's configuration? We may wish to include it in our documentation.

Hi - I have rebuilt the RHEL5.5 server from scratch again to ensure no leftover files from previous install attempts were muddying the waters.
I have modified the yum.conf & wgetrc files as per your document for using proxies. Again, this all appears OK - I can wget your nagiosxi install file and yum is getting the files OK from net via the proxy. After the install process, I am back to the same issue where the Core Config Manager screen is blank - if I select any of the options in Monitoring or Alerting , the screen remains blank.
If I select Import or Write Config files under tools, The screen updates, but I don't get any output to indicate if it worked or failed.

I am including the output from various install steps below that report some type of error. Hopefully it is enough for you to figure out what is going wrong.

1-prereqs - This is the ouput from the second time I ran it - to make sure that everything and all dependencies had been installed.
The only problems I can see is that there is no perl-CPAN or pear.php.net/HTML_Template_IT packages found.

To start mysqld at boot time you have to copy
support-files/mysql.server to the right place for your system

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SET A PASSWORD FOR THE MySQL root USER !
To do so, start the server, then issue the following commands:
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password'
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h lxfm201nag.hdwa.health.wa.gov.au password 'new-password'

Alternatively you can run:
/usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation

which will also give you the option of removing the test
databases and anonymous user created by default. This is
strongly recommended for production servers.

See the manual for more instructions.

You can start the MySQL daemon with:
cd /usr ; /usr/bin/mysqld_safe &

You can test the MySQL daemon with mysql-test-run.pl
cd mysql-test ; perl mysql-test-run.pl

Please report any problems with the /usr/bin/mysqlbug script!

Check your configuration file(s) to ensure that they contain valid
directives and data defintions. If you are upgrading from a previous
version of Nagios, you should be aware that some variables/definitions
may have been removed or modified in this version. Make sure to read
the HTML documentation regarding the config files, as well as the
'Whats New' section to find out what has changed.

Can you post the tail of your apache error log after attempting to access Nagiosql through the Web interface? PHP error message are turned off by default on our installation, so if you're getting a blank screen it's probably a php error. I noticed an error message in the install scripts regarding the pear/html templating library, which is what Nagiosql uses. I'm wondering if they're related.
