High Availabilty Setup of NagiosXI

Post by Satyam »

Dear Team,

Currently I am evaluating High Availabilty setup of NagiosXI for a fresh requirement. I need information about the no. of NagiosXI product licenses required for HA setup of NagiosXI. Also its appreciated if someone can refer to detailed technical implementation document on the HA setup of NagiosXI as I would like to test it first. I have already referred to standard documents "XI_High_Availability_Options.pdf" but it just shares an idea.
Thanks,

Generally the most basic high availability setup would include one Production server, one Backup server, and one Proofing or Testing server. This would ensure that if the Production server went down you would be able to quickly transition to the Backup which would be a mirror of the Production, and give you time to swap the Test server to a backup "if need be." I do not believe we have any additional documentation as it is not a very extensive subject at the level I outlined, how large are you looking to scale your HA environment?

Hi slansing,

We are actually having only one production NagiosXI server with a offloaded MySQL DB server, we are monitoring close to 800 hosts which comrises servers, networks, exchange, AD, Urls, DB, etc.. and close to around 8000 services. Also I am using my MySQL server as gearmand worker node for distributed checks.

My main worry is that do I need to get one more license of NagiosXI for the slave/backup/redundant NagiosXI server for setting the HA of NagiosXI in my environment. I am sure i can handle the technicalities.
Thanks,

It is highly recommended to do so, especially when monitoring an environment at that level. Now, the three key uses could be used in technically any fashion you see fit, for instance a backup DB server, then two mirrored XI systems, etc.

Hi slansing,

Thanks for the help but still I have doubt on the no. of licences required part. As currently we have only one NagiosXI license which is being utilized on the main prduction master server. Do I need to purchase additional NagiosXI licences or let me put this into this way "What is the least no. of NagiosXI licences required to setup a minimal HA setup of NagiosXI in production"
Thanks,

1 XI license covers:
- Production install
- Backup or HA install
- Test Environment
